The wildly popular British period drama “Downton Abbey” has breathed new life into PBS, launching the premier of the second season to the tune of over four million viewers (that’s double the average viewership of last season). In an effort to cash in on the hot property, PBS began offering “Downton Abbey-inspired” jewelry on shopPBS.org, utilizing some of the show’s character names. Unfortunately, PBS tried to slip this marketing trick past the show’s creator, Carnival Films.

The Daily Mail reported that Carnival Films discovered the unofficial products offered on PBS’s site and promptly sent an email to the show’s American broadcaster, requesting that the jewelry be removed. PBS complied, likely in an effort to avoid possible lawsuits for various intellectual property violations, including trademark and copyright infringement, and to preserve its relationship with Carnival Films in the wake of the announcement that Shirley MacLaine will join the cast of Downton Abbey next season.
